Dear girl friend,

Credit

I really love you from the depths of my heart. Love in its truest form — not the selfish lust for personal gratification that we have become so used to. You are beautiful, smart and funny. You give me that “butterfly in my stomach” feeling whenever I’m with you.

But today, my dear friend, I have something to tell you. I struggle a lot. I know you may have no Idea, but some of the time I think of you not more than an object of physical pleasure. Something inside of me tells me you are more than that and I should not think that way, but many times I cannot help it. Maybe it is my fault, maybe it is not, I really do not know.

The world around doesn’t seem to help either. Everywhere I turn to, your species is synonymous to nothing else but an object of sexual gratification. Billboards, adverts, music, even movies — all the time it stares me in the face and there seems to be no way to escape.

I must define my own truth. I must question all that I see and hear that belittles your dignity. I must filter out the noise. I must make my own decisions from my inner convictions. That decision is the reason for this letter.

I promise to continue to love you, to cherish you, to care deeply and genuinely and to treat you with all the purity that you deserve.

If I tell you say I love you o, e no mean say your body be my own o.**

This post is dedicated to every girl. You deserve to be loved, not just for what you can give, but for who you are.

** Nigerian pidgin meaning “If I tell you I love you, it doesn’t make your body mine”
